Obituary for Raymond Joseph Champney

Raymond Joseph Champney, Bedford City Councilman and Mayor ProTem, passed away peacefully at home on February 6, 2017, following a valiant battle with lung cancer. He left this Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 25, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Bedford, with Celebrant Fr. John Robert Skeldon. Interment: Private.
Memorials : In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ray’s name to a charity of your choice.Ray was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on August 6, 1940, to Raymond J. and Florence (McConnell) Champney. He graduated from Power Memorial Academy High School in Manhattan and served in the United States Army stationed in Korea. Following an honorable discharge, Ray attended CCNY. He was married in 1976 to Anne Kelly and in 1979 they relocated to Texas where Ray founded Champney & Associates advertising agency with offices in Dallas, Mexico City and New York. Most recently Ray was a business consultant and owner of The Alternative Board-DFW/Mid-Cities. Ray was active in his church community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on his church Pastoral Advisory Council and the parent advisory council at Holy Trinity Catholic School while his daughter was a student. He volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels and mentored middle-school children through the Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotary Club. Ray served on and chaired many committees and commissions within the City of Bedford and was in his tenth year serving on the Bedford City Council. He was active in the Arts Council Northeast Tarrant County and served on their Executive Board of Directors. Ray survived lung cancer in 2000 and became a certified American Cancer Society facilitator and periodically spoke to high school students about the effects of smoking. In 2001, Ray formed a monthly Cancer Support Group for cancer patients, survivors and care-givers that he co-facilitated for 16 years.Ray was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister,
Geraldine; brother-in-law, Michael R. Miskovits; father-in-law, Charles V. Kelly; sister-in-law, Marilyn Kelly. world as he lived his life: with love, faith, dignity and integrity.
